What Types of Target Shooting Services & Amenities Should States Offer?

This research was conducted on behalf of the Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation. Funding was provided by a Multistate Conservation Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and jointly administered with the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

States and industry work to provide target shooting facilities that best serve the public. In this report, we provide insights from the nation’s target shooters, including current and potential new shooters, to support their efforts. Long story short: Keep it local, keep it fun, and keep it safe!

Here are some key considerations:

  • Offer a diverse selection of shooting opportunities for an array of abilities. Keeping it fun and interesting will help retain customers and attract new ones.
  • Thirty (30) minutes is about as far as people want to travel to visit a range. Any further and we lose many new and/or casual participants.
  • Communicate a mindset of safety, precautions, and requirements. Also keep in mind that a hesitancy to participate is not always based around personal safety, but if they will present a danger to others around them.

Explore the research to learn more about the kinds of shooting opportunities, amenities, and range services of interest to current and potential target shooters.
