Economic Benefits of Dam Removal

The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC), on behalf of Michigan Trout Unlimited, Michigan Steelhead and Salmon Fishermen’s Association (MSSFA), the Great Lakes Council of Fly Fishers International, Anglers of the Au Sable, and the Michigan Hydro Relicensing Coalition, contracted Southwick Associates to compile information on the economic impact and natural resource value related to dam removal. The following report discusses the existing literature related to the economic impacts of dam removal. Research has shown that dam removal generally has no negative effects on nearby property values, with many studies finding neutral or slightly positive outcomes. Dam removal also tends to increase recreation and tourism benefits, with the public expressing a clear willingness to pay for restored rivers. In addition, the dam decommissioning phase generates short-term economic activity and jobs, providing immediate, localized economic gains.
