In 2020, the Northeastern Tennessee Regional Economic Partnership (NeTREP) commissioned a study to characterize outdoor recreation within the eight-county region it serves. The goal was to quantify, for the region, an average annual level of engagement in outdoor recreation and a measure of economic activity generated by Tennessee’s outdoor community spending on these activities.
More than 1.1 million people take part in nonmotorized outdoor recreational activities in the northeast region of the state and almost 470,000 take part in motorized activities in the region. These results include Tennessee residents and nonresidents visiting the region. The most popular activities are picnicking (9%), trail sports (5%), and wildlife watching (4.5%). More than $940 million in retail spending in the region is associated with nonmotorized outdoor recreational activity. Trail sports, picnicking, and water sports account for 46% of total spending.
