The Economic Contributions of Freshwater Angling in British Columbia

This report presents information on participation, angler spending, and the economic contributions of freshwater fishing in British Columbia. Nearly 346,000 anglers purchased a freshwater fishing license in British Columbia during the 2015‐16 season, and that number rose to more than 350,000 anglers by the 2018‐19 season. Roughly 80% of these anglers were British Columbia residents, 12% were Canadians living in other provinces, and the remaining 8% were foreign visitors. Angler spending in 2015 totaled nearly $498 million, creating substantial economic impacts which reverberated throughout the provincial and national economies. Motivations of British Columbia’s freshwater anglers were also explored, and the most popular answers had to do with relaxing, being close to nature, and escaping the daily routine.
