The 2021 Great Kansas Fishing Derby Evaluation

From May 1 to July 31, 2021, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks hosted an inaugural fishing contest called, “The Great Kansas Fishing Derby.” The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the Derby’s impact on fishing participation, license sales, angler behavior and satisfaction, and to provide insight into how to market and promote future Derbies. The Derby had a positive effect on angler numbers and likely helped trend sales upward toward 2018 levels. Over the course of 2021, almost 45,000 people tried fishing for the first time or returned to fishing after an absence. Greater promotion of a future Derby in conjunction with expanding the number of lakes and fish tagged would likely lead to greater participation, potentially more sales, and more recreational opportunity for Kansas anglers in general.
