Economic Significance of Outdoor Recreation in the Gila and San Francisco River Watersheds

Recreational activity generates economic activity. Visitors in pursuit of outdoor recreation in the Gila River and San Francisco watersheds spend money in the region, supporting the economies of both the watershed region and New Mexico as a whole. This study by Southwick Associates, under contract to The Pew Charitable Trusts, documents the economic activity, jobs, income, and tax revenues that are directly supported by this recreational spending. In addition to the direct economic measure, the study also reports the total economic contributions, which includes the multiplier effects of the recreational spending rippling across businesses that are indirectly impacted.
